interview

I got these questions from Lioneyes. i dont' have a link to her journal, so if you read this & can help...please do!

1) What is the most important piece of advice you have taken either learned or heard?

No one ever told me this , but in my life I have learned that when I look back, I       have never regretted being too kind.

2) If you had to choose one hobby to stick with for eternity, what would it be and why? I want to spend eternity sitting on a porch swapping stories with my family & friends.

3) Is there anything in your life that you feel like you're in denial over?

I am really scared of illness & death,so I try to live joyfully.

4) You have to relive two days of your life...one good and one bad...describe the days you choose.

Well, I guess for both of those ,I would choose theday my children were born, discomfort of labor, and joy of birth. that is kind of an allegory for life ,isn't it?

5) AOL has decided to cancel Journals. As a frequent user of this community; write a quick argument on why this is a poor business decision on their part.

Well, there is always pencil & paper!

In keeping with breaking up the monotony I have created this bonus question.

Bonus Question: What is your most favorite journal entry that you have wrote and why? I think this one

Edit Entry Delete Entry Caitlin

Caitlin...I need to tell you about her , but she nearly defies my descriptive powers. When she was little, she would climb on top of door jambs and jump on unsuspecting people's heads as they passed underneath....when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up ,she would say "I wanna fly" At 9, she watched gymnasts on tv & said ,"that's it! I wanna fly like that" And fly she did, passing up kids who started in the sport  when they were two.She won competitions all over the state, often offering her medals to girls who didn't win one.

Just after winning the third place medal for State Competition, she shattered her leg in 4 places doing a double flip at the gym.She was in a cast up to her hip for 6 weeks, on bed rest for two, out of gym for almost a year. During this time she wrote a book on Broken Bones & How to Deal, offering suggestions like "Name your cast. You are going to be together for a while,so you might as well get to know each other."

Her gymnastic dreams are not a reality now, she still can't train that hard. She waves her team mates off & wishes them good luck. She loves going to the gym and never mentions the time when she was the golden girl.

Now,she takes ballet and has the look of another world on her face when she dances.

On a foggy night in the park, there is a talent exhibition. Caitlin is done with her on-stage dance and I am looking for her.I see a small crowd gathered. All unaware , she is dancing to some inner music. I can only faintly see her in the mist. She looks like a fairy....Flying...

Okay now the rules...After answering these questions you must post them in your journal with a link to the journal of the interviewer. Then either leave a link back in the interviewers interview entry or email the interviewer that you have posted your answers in your journal. Then you must offer to interview five other people. You may use these questions or make up your own. If someone is interested in being interviewed by you all they have to do is leave a comment saying interview me or something like that.

Anybody game?

Email me or leave a comment and I will respond with my own set of questions.......thanks

Number 3 is Figaro, helping to decorate for Christmas. he is a young upstart , 1 year old. he came into a house already overly blessed with kitties, but won us all over with his charm.

what I did on my summer vacation week one

I get up while the day is still all fresh & green to take Mariah to work (man, i hate it for her)

The big decision is what to listen to on the way. This morning it was U2.

After I get past that hurdle,it 's coffee with Mom, then home to sit amongst my plants in my agressively green yard and read the paper.

when Caitlin & any sundry other children who have spent the night get up, it's off to the pool.

My mom moved out of the apartment complex where we keep "our" pool 2 years ago, but since we go there every day, they somehow are under the impression that we live there & I would hate to disillusion them at this late date!

then it's pb& j for lunch.

serious philosopical discussions then ensue from the deck chairs & the hammock over the lyrics of the latest Good Charlotte song and the last episode of Vive La Bam. (this will make no sense to those of you without teens in your house.)

the next major decision is where to go on our walk.

Oh, I have SSSSSSSO earned this!

false starts

Caitlin was supposed to have outpatient surgery on Monday.

Ever since she was little , she has had problems with ear infections. If she ever gets a cold,it is a sinus infection lasting weeks. The doctor says it will fix that if she has her sinus drainage holes enlarged, sinus lining scraped, adnoids removed and another set of tubes put in her ears.

She is not nervous a bit, wants to get on with it.

I get her up and get into the shower.
A realization hits me

"Caitlin", I yell through soapsuds, "you're not eating , are you?"

"No!', came the indignant answer.

 Then, "what if I did?"

Half a breakfast bar later, there was no surgery for her this day.

This is the kid I usually beg to eat breakfast!               .

weekend assignment

Weekend Assignment #61: What is the most ridiculous name you've ever given a pet?.I have a 70 pound mean-looking sort of Chowbrador that showed up at our house when Caitlin was in kindergarten & won't let daddies of her friends come in the yard to get their children today.

Her name (snarl) is Butterfly!

She will let the tiniest kitten or curious toddler pull her ears & crawl all over her,but no man except my husband comes in our yard.

when I am coming outside to get her by the collar so the pizza guy can get out of his car, it is funny to see their faces when I call her name!

excess

the first pic is my Girl Scouts, tired from camping

next ... wild women on the beach

then,our children...

Oh, I had such a good weekend!

I have 4 friends who all met through a neighborhood bar where I worked when I quit teaching full time to stay home with Mariah. The place was a magical oasis where we all found a home for awhile.

That was 22 years ago. now 3 of us are teachers, one an educational assistant, one an occupational therapist.

Between us, we have10 biological children, one unofficially adopted son & 3 stepchildren.

Our friendship has lasted longer than 4 of our marriages.

All the kids have been raised as cousins. We live in 3 different states, which is a good thing, because when we get together ,the message is excess...we eat too much , drink enough to float boats, laugh way too loud for the comfort of our neighbors.

We adore our husbands, are devoted to our kids, but we know , that at the end of the day,it's our girlfriends that get us through.

Stephanie and I drove the hour and a half to Stacey's house. We went to eat at a place that had an all you can eat crawfish , crab leg & shrimp bar. I quickly created a landfill of crustacen crud aand put it on a nearby table. When the people we thought had left returned and exclaimed, "what is THAT?" we became helpless with laughter and never did own up to it!

Then, god help me, there was a chocolate fountain!

We went to see America.

When Mariah told a friend, "my mom went to see America", the woman responded, "oh, like to find herself?" so I feel compelled to add, not like Easy Rider, the band form the early 70's...Ventura Highway,Horse with no Name?

We laughed & cried & talked till 4 am.

We got up and took our bad heads to the beach.

Then drove home & I jumped in the car & drove another 45 minutes in the opposite direction to go to a baby shower for my friend Melissa, who is my co-leader with the Girl Scouts. she is 39, has a 14 & 12 year old. She was quite surprised! I frolicked a bit with my Girl Scout friends.

Then Sunday, another baby showere for my new great-niece! She is so sweet and baby-smelling...I am so happy to have all this love in my life!

twitchy

Caitlin has just started going places without me.

This is interesting in and of itself since she has been on my leg since birth.

She went to a football game where the junior team was playing at the local high school. A boy jumped up and hung form the railing,as boys will do.

My rowdy little gymnast jumped up next to him.

"Girls can't do that!"he croaked.

Caitlin turned a flip off the bar, twirled about and said,
"Don't try that , I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself."

He calls every night!

if i could be....

"Hey look, a meme! We'll call this one the "If I could be" meme. If you're tagged, you're supposed to follow the directions for answering the meme and then select 3 others to pass the meme along to. You have to select people who haven't answered it, and you can't tag me because I started this silly thing. Please link back to the person who tagged you, as I'm going to try and track this thing and see how far it goes.

So here's how it works. Immediately following there is a list of 18 different occupations. You must select at least 5 of them (feel free to select more). You may add more if you like to your list before you pass it on (after you select 5 of the items as it was passed to you). Each one begins with "If I could be..." Of the 5 you selected, you are to finish each phrase with what you would do as a member of that profession.

For example, if the selected occupation was "farmer" you might take the phrase "If I could be a farmer..." and add to it "I would raise llamas and give them away to children who didn't have any pets." See how easy that is? Here's the list:

If I could be a scientist...
If I could be a farmer...
If I could be a musician...
If I could be a doctor...
If I could be a painter...
If I could be a gardener...
If I could be a missionary...
If I could be a chef...
If I could be an architect...
If I could be a linguist...
If I could be a psychologist...
If I could be a librarian...
If I could be an athlete...
If I could be a lawyer...
If I could be an innkeeper...
If I could be a professor...
If I could be a writer...
If I could be a llama-rider...

If I could be a professor...I'd wear Birkenstocks & ride my bke to class, have lectures under the trees & give easy finals

If I could be a librarian...I d read durning my lunch hour

if I could be a psychologist...I'd tell people it's just not so damn serious!

if I could be an innkeeper...I'd knock money off the price of a room if people would tell me stories of their travels.

If I could be a gardener...I'd have an indecent liason with the poolboy!

So this was fun! I got it from olddog, he is always coming up with cool stuff!

Weekend Assignment #59: We've all had teachers who have made a difference in our lives. Tell us about one of yours. It can be a teacher from any level of education, from kindergarten to graduate school.

Extra Credit: Tell us your second favorite subject in schoool.

Okay Dr. Cronis, This one is for you.

When I started my Special Education block,I met him, a big viking looking red-headed man. It was 1976 & he smoked a pipe while he lectured.

He told stories about  when he was in graduate school in florida, they made him go around the campus blindfolded to insure he would know what it was like to be handicapped. He used his cane, found a tile floor, and proud of himself that he had located the bathroom, did his business.

He then heard laugher and realized he had peed in the sink in front of a large lecture hall!

He said if you can't laugh at yourself and your students, you will burn out teaching school.

When my father died & I was late registering, he loaned me the money to pay my late fees.

He taught me that whatever you teach a handicapped person, make sure it is something they need. Dont' waste their time.

I remember this every day, Dr.C.

saturday six

Here's my Saturday Six! I think I'm first to play!

1. How many scars do you have on your body?  Where are they? well, lets' see...there is the scar on my leg where I fell on the bus at 14, the scar on my face under my eye where I tripped over a curb at Mardi Gras with my child on my hip & my candy bag in my hand. It is not noticable unless I point it out & no, I was not drunk at the time. My baby said, "get up, Mama ,we're gonna miss the parade!"while my husband stopped the bleeding with my panties I had worn to the ball the night before which he had in his pocket.2. What is the last junk food you ate in such large quantity that you actually felt guilty afterwards?an ungodly amount of Pringles potaoe chips.3. What is the closest spot to your home where you go when you feel like you need an afternoon escape? I love the park with it's long hiking trails, lakes, aggressively verdant trees. There is a coffee shop nearby that lends itself to long talks where Caitlin & I hang out.My back deck has birds in every bush, a hammock that  should be a controlled substance, and an old dog for company. Of those in your collection, what movie have you watched the most times? I have a bad addiction to old "Friends"episodes... I used to wait for rainy days in the summer so instead of "having" to go to the beach, I could stay in and watch.5. Have you ever felt discriminated against?  What about you do you believe led to the discrimination? I feel economically discriminated against by this system of government where power is in the hands of the rich & they have a vested interest in keeping the rest of us down, but that's another story.

Sometimes kids act like I'm invisible "cause I'm older.

Mechanics act like I'm stupid because I am a woman...

But life is good
6. RAPID FIRE QUESTION#3:  Have you ever hired a:
    a. Maid -- once,she said it was too much work to clean  my house,I asked her if she wanted more money, she said I didn't have that much money! b. Lawyer --yes
    c. Chauffer -- no
    d. Plumber -- no    e. Photographer -- no
    f. Realtor -- no    g. Gardener -- no

Hey friends and nieghbors!

Come play the interview game at the above addy!

You'll have fun!

new job

I am not a person who changes jobs easily. I worked at my other 2 jobs for 10 years each.I left both due to involuntary transfers due to drop in enrollment, where I was last hired so first to go.

I have never felt at home in the school I went to this year. It started when I first met the principal & she bragged about missing her son's birthday to go to work.

It got worse when my husband had abdominal surgery for suspected cancer & I was out for a week.when I came back, only one person asked me if me husband died, got better or remanined in a coma! (he is fine now, but it was a hairy time)

Plus I went from teaching severely handicapped children in my own class to co-teaching with 2 5th grade teachers with children with mild learning problems.Big difference! Neither of those teachers were very welcoming, not mean, but into looking out for themselves, which didn't include encouraging a new person.

In short, it has been a nightmare!

I kept a positive outlook & tried to findk some good in every day.I made a friend. It is okay.

But , yesterday I interviewed for a new job!

I went to a Saturday workshop. I didn't want to go , it was The Week of the Tooothache. There I saw a resource teacher I knew who said that other people wanted to hire me & told me about this unit that was new.It si a severe & multi disability unit, self contained. The principal had asked for me.

I went yesterday & there was really no interview to it! She asked me if I wanted to come & hugged me when i said yes! I said I had mailed her my resume (when really I couldn't find it) and she said , "I don't need a resume! I have heard so many good things about you!" (I don't want to come off as bragging here, but I was highlly respected in my old school & my ego was severely challenged in the one I am sentenced to now)

Its a good thing because Dragon Lady  of the Carreer Women was not at all pleased when I told her I was taking a half day to go to Caitlin's graduation from 8th grade today!

I am ready to shake the dust of that place off my feet!

at the ballgame

for the photo blog assignment!

mother's day

Okay,so if a scrooge is someone who doens't like Christmas, I guess I am a mooge (most ornery obnoxious girl ever) cause I dont' really care for mother's day.

it just seems a bit heavy on the guilt.

Mother's sacrifices, all that sort of stuff.

I never sacrificed a thing for my children

yeah, a lot of things changed, but it was always a plus

ever heard anyone say, "well, winning the lottery is great, but I had to mke a lot of sacrifices"?

i don't want them to have to come see me or give me something to prove they love me. i know they do.

Every day

every day is a blessing to me because I have them.

I did have a nice day.

Mariah, who is known for her strong opinions and voicing them loudly and Caitlin, who is the adhd poster child, gave me a cute little bracelet with two little girls on it. Engraved on them are the words "Bitchy" and "Twitchy"

weekend assignment

My girls and me on our front porch.

Note Mariah's birthday hat and bored expression!

Mariah

24 and in love...

trying to add pics

did it work?

If it did, this is Scoutshire woods, where i have had so much fun with my Girl Scouts. if it didn't ,well, use your imagination while I try again!

concert

We took a little family trip to Pensacola, FL (3hours the last time tom & I made it, 45 minutes with Terry driving) (tom & I are famous for getting lost) to see Sarah McLoughlin. If any of you get the chance, that is a show well worth seeing.she is great! the stage setting is very elaborate & she relates things to the audience with little stories about her songs, very high tech & intimate at the same time.Terry is my hero "cause he bought Caitlin & I tshirts (what good is going to a concert with out a tshirt?)

the part of the whole trip I will remember is stopping at a convenience store & noticing they had cowboy hats to match Caitlin & Mariah's  new tshirts. They tried them on & started doing their version of a Virginia Reel, in perfect step with each other (all those dance lessons do pay off, folks) The cash register dude took pictures! "I love this job!", he said.

Mariah's birthday is this weekend. (in our family we dont' celebrate birthday, we have birthseasons) She is 24 & the partner in my journey through this life.I am closer to her than I have ever been to anyone . It is so wonderful to have another adult in the house! ( I adore my husband, but in so many ways,he is another one of the kids)

Just another day at the circus!

This story requires a little background information.
Granny & Papa are my husband's parents. They raised 9 children who are all close and greatly loved. They best thing of the many loving things they did for these children was to show them what a life long love affair was like.
They are spiritual and innocent of many of the way sof this world. Until Papa's recent death, they walked everywhere had in hand.
This is the story of Granny & the Vibrator
We were all noisily assembled in Papa & Granny's dining room for Thanksgiving dinner. The get-togethers here are casual. You come in, pile what you brought on the table or stove, grab a plate, a chair if one is availiabel & start eating & talking.
The topic of whispered conversation today is a long cylinrical shaped device lying on the counter.Everyone is arguing over its purpose and position there.
No one wants to be the one to ask.
By general consensus, I am going to ask
okay, here I go....
"So , Granny, what's this?"
"It's a vibrator," she replied, kneading her famous biscuit dough. We got in Mobile. Do you want to try it?"
I have lost the power of speech by this time,so when I dont' answer, she picks the phallic thing up & proceeds to rub it around my neck. "Papa and I love it," she says."I had a stiff neck & the package said it was good for relieving tension."
All the relatives who had goaded me into asking were choking quietly by this time.

girl scout Banquet

Saturday I spent a lovely rainy day trying to put pictures in this journal, but I was not able to master this feat.

So,picture this in your mind.

It's the annual Girl scout Banquet. The little girls are all flushed & excited. My Cadettes are trying to alternate between blase and frantic over their preparations. They are in charge of door prizes. What they are actually doing is trying to talk people who have won door prizes into donate their prize to them. Little criminals!

In bounds Tony with his mom & little sis. I taught Tony from 1st grade until 5th. He is in 7th grade now.Tony was adopted from Paraguay when he ws 2 years old. He weighed 16 pounds. He is about 4 feet tall & skinny as a rail. He has and IQ of about 70.He is so hyperactive, I promise I have literally seen him climb a cinder block wall (not real high, but still)He is also the kindest person I have ever known. If any of my kids had to go to time-out,Tony would sit with them. His parents are more well-off financially than most of my kids' parents and Tony brought lemonade for everybody. If anyone didn't have ice cream money, Tony wouldn't eat his in front of them.

He ran into my arms and got in my lap. "I wish I was still in your class," he said. He took all the papers out of my purse to show me how well he could read.then he went to his table, got his plate & moved Caitlin's stuff over, saying"I used to always sit by you at lunch, remember?"Caitlin took it in stride, she  went to school with Tony. They are the same chronological age.It was so good to see him again

I was in charge of announcements. At the end,the head of the Service Unit said,"you forgot one" and gave me The Outstanding Leader Award. This is such a hoot because we are the rebel troop, always pushing our limits.

As my girls get older,it is difficult for us to get together. They have so many hobbies & school keeps them busy.

But they all came up on stage & we put our arms around each other. I laughed, "It's just like when we were little - I mean when you were little"

You had it right the first time", Ava said.

I'm glad I'm still growing up.

interview

good morning all of my dear friends!

I am looking for someone to read about to take my mind off my toothache.

I will be fine as soon as the drugs kick in!

Please go to see Jude at http://journals.aol.com/jmorancoyle/MyWay  to see her answers to my interview questions.

I love the interview game!

I hope all of you have a day filled with blue skies & green lights.

Peace,

Marti
